Mission Statement
The National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), created in 1986, is a non-profit organization based in Minneapolis , Minnesota . Its mission is to extend and improve life through innovative stem cell therapies.
The Hispanos Dando Esperanza: Nu Alpha Kappa Fraternity, Inc.-Hermandad Initiative is dedicated to outreaching the Hispanic/Latino communities. This outreach to the Hispanic/Latino community demonstrates that the National Marrow Donor Program and Nu Alpha Kappa Fraternity, Inc. are committed to serving our cultural diversity U.S.A. This initiative promotes innovation and teamwork.
By incorporating these values, the National Marrow Donor Program and Nu Alpha Kappa Fraternity, Inc. aspire to set a standard of excellence nationwide that rewards our recipients, donors, volunteers, and communities.
This Hispanic/Latino Stem Cell and Marrow Initiative focuses efforts throughout California Colorado and Nevada with 92 National Marrow Donor Program ® donor centers and 10 recruitment groups, and 16 Nu Alpha Kappa Fraternity, Inc. Chapters.
The National Marrow Donor Program ® - History
The National Marrow Donor Program ® (NMDP), created in 1986, is a non-profit organization based in Minneapolis, Minnesota that facilitates unrelated donor stem cell transplants for patients with life-threatening blood diseases who do not have matching donors in their families. Currently, the NMDP ® facilitates more than 100 transplants each month. The NMDP ® provides a single point of access for all sources of blood stem cells used in transplantation: marrow, peripheral blood and umbilical cord blood. The Registry is able to search its own database and provide physicians with information on multiple stem cell sources for life-saving transplants.
Hispanic/Latino Need
Life threatening diseases such as leukemia and aplastic anemia are equal opportunity diseases. Blood diseases occur at similar rates among members of all races and ethnic groups including Hispanics/Latinos. If a patient is diagnosed with one of these life-threatening diseases and requires a blood stem cells transplant, the first chance for an identical Human Leukocyte Antigen matched stem cell or marrow is from a sibling. If no match is found, stem cells or marrow from a donor unrelated to the patient is the alternative. Because a match must be exact and the uniqueness of antigen types, the best chance for a match is from within the patients own racial or ethnic group.
Hispanic/Latino Stem Cell and Marrow Initiative
The National Marrow Donor Program ® and Nu Alpha Kappa Fraternity, Inc. vigorously supports campaigns and outreach initiatives to expand the pool of unrelated stem cell and marrow donors of minority heritage in order to improve the chances of minority patients finding matched unrelated donors. The Hispanic/Latino Stem Cell and Marrow Initiative is a program designed to reach out to the Hispanic/Latino communities.
